Rounding Cape Horn Theme
Rounding Cape Horn Theme
The Black Band performs this original song written by band member Patrick Michael Karnahan. Special guest features include Margie Butler (Golden Bough) on Penny Whistle, and John Baker on French horn. Patrick wrote the song as a feature for a call and response between the whistle and French horn. He wanted to give the song a very rich maritime feel, as though you were on the top deck of a pitching ship, as large wavers, and wind thunder at the sails. Patrick performs on the melodeon while the rest of the band fill in the other parts. Cape Horn (near the tip of South America) is know as a ships graveyard for good reason. Strong winds and large waves make it a good bet you might not make it around! The song is placed as the very first song for the Black Irish bands 12th CD album, "into the Arms of the Sea". This CD has been the best selling maritime album of all times at all most of the major West Coast Maritime museums. on the album Patrick wrote a totla of six ballads, with many of them featuring French horn and Melodeon. To buy a copy of this Black irish favorite go to the bands web-site www.blackirish.com, or the CD Baby.com and type in Black irish band.

The Last Cape Horners
The Last Cape Horners
The Last Cape Horners - The End of the Great Sailing Ship Era Gustaf Erikson of Finland owned the last great fleet of sailing ships the world would ever see. He employed them in the last trade left to the sailing ship, the carriage of grain from Australia to Europe by way of treacherous Cape Horn. Now old men, the last of the true Cape Horners tell of the dreadful conditions in which they lived and worked while sailing the great souther ocean towards the Horn. The film is illustrated with amazing archival footage shot on board three of these vessels in the las days of sail. Running time 72 minutes plus 20 minutes of extra interviews.

BOURNE, MA- Tall Ship Kruzenshtern to Visit Massachusetts Maritime Academy (07-03-09)
06/30/09 Tall Ship Kruzenshtern to Visit MMA Sail Massachusetts announced today that KRUZENSHTERN, the famous Russian tall ship, will make a port visit to the Massachusetts Maritime academy in Bourne on the Cape Cod Canal on July 3rd. The Academy will host the Class A vessel from July 3-6th. Dusty Rhodes, organizer of Sail Boston stated that the visit would be part of their Sail Massachusetts initiative to invite tall ships to the Commonwealth coastal communities before their arrival in Boston. KRUZENSHTERN is 376-foot in length, four-masted barque rig, and the second largest traditional sail training vessel in the world still in operation. The ship was built in 1927 as PADUA in Bremerhave, Germany, and was given to the USSR in 1946 as war reparation after World War II. She was renamed KRUZENSHTERN after the early 19th century Baltic German explorer in Russian service, Adam Johann Krusenstern (1770-1846). Since 1990 the vessel has been used as a sail training vessel by the Baltic Academy in Kalingrad, Russia and is supported by Tall Ship Friends, a non-profit organization in Hamburg, Germany. Captain Thomas L. Bushy, Vice President of Marine Operations at the Academy said; We are delighted to again welcome the KRUZENSHTERN, its officers, cadets and crew to the Academy. The people of Bourne and surrounding Cape Cod communities always look forward to meeting and socializing with our international visitors. The public is invited to tour the ship during her visit to the ...
